Understanding Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are the rechargeable batteries that are most widely used energy storage solutions, known for their reliability, affordability, and efficiency. These rechargeable batteries are commonly used in automotive, industrial, and backup power applications, providing a stable power source when needed.

Key Features

  • Cost-Effective – Affordable and widely available.
  • Easy to Manufacture – Simple and efficient production process.
  • Reliable & Durable – Long-lasting with proven performance.
  • High Power Output – Capable of delivering high currents.

Applications

  • Automotive – Engine starting, lighting, and ignition
  • Electric Motors – Powering electric vehicles and motorcycles
  • Backup Power – Used in home inverters and industrial setups
  • Renewable Energy – Ideal for solar power storage solutions
  • Industries  –  For heavy duty use

Types of Lead acid battery

Conventional Lead-Acid Batteries

  • Plante –  Mechanically & electrically more durable. The normal life of the battery is 15-20 years.
Applications: large power stations, large standby power application
  • Flat Plate – They are composed of positive and negative plates, each made up of pasted grids, and are simpler in design. These batteries are more resistant to heat.
Applications: Domestic automotive, home power-back ups
  • Tubular Plate – The positive electrode is a comb-like lead skeleton that holds the positive material with the help of tubular bags.
Application:  home power backups, electric propulsion of vehicles, solar equipment.

Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) Batteries

  • Flat Plate Absorbent Glass Mat – The electrolyte is held in the glass mats with very thin glass fibres woven into it to increase the surface area.
Applications: marine, motorbikes (explore more applications) -what about this?
  • Flat Plate Gel – The positive (+ve) plate is a lead alloy grid, and lead oxide is pressed into it. The electrolyte immobilized in a silica-based gel enhances the temperature capability.
Applications: Modern Motorbikes, All Terrain Vehicles
  • Tubular Gel – It features a tubular positive plate, with the electrolyte immobilized in a gel. Separator material is generally not an AG, but rather a micro-porous plastic material.
Applications: Standby Power, solar, and telecom usage.
