Battery Maintenance Tips

Proper battery maintenance is essential to ensure reliable performance and extend battery lifespan. A well-maintained car or bike battery provides consistent starting power and ensures smooth operation of your vehicle’s electrical systems, including lights, infotainment, and safety features. Investing a little time in maintenance can significantly improve battery lifespan and overall vehicle reliability. Here are the tips to maintain your battery.

1. Keep the Terminals Clean

Dirty or corroded terminals can cause poor electrical contact, reducing battery performance and lifespan. Clean the terminals regularly to avoid voltage drops and power loss.

2. Charge at the Recommended Current (Amps) Only

Overcharging or deep discharging can damage the battery and shorten its lifespan. Always use a charger with the correct voltage and current rating specified by the battery manufacturer.

3. Check Water Levels for Lead Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries require proper electrolyte levels to function efficiently. Check the water levels every 2–3 months or during routine maintenance and top up with distilled water only.

4. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extreme heat or cold can significantly impact battery performance and lifespan. High temperatures can cause the electrolyte to evaporate, reducing battery capacity, whereas cold weather can thicken the electrolyte, reducing cranking power and making it harder to start the vehicle. So, it is advisable to always park your car in shaded areas whenever possible.

5. Ensure Proper Connections

Loose or faulty connections can cause power loss and increase wear on the battery. Ensure that the connecting cables are tightly secured and connected to the right poles. Check cables and clamps for signs of wear, corrosion, or fraying—replace them if damaged.

Tip: Always remember that a well-maintained battery lasts longer and has high performance and durability.
